The Lighthouse and The Dancing Dolphins

We recently returned to Sanibel Island for a short weekend escape. Fortunately, we did not experience red tide this time. With very few tourists around, we had the island mostly to ourselves, but yet we spent most of the time out on the water. We did not bike, shop or visit some of the usual places. Instead, we hurried out of bed as soon as the sun came up through our window in the morning, packed a quick lunch and jumped in the boat. My youngest son in particular dreaded having to sleep and waste valuable time. All he wanted and needed to do was go fishing.

From the bay, I could see the white sand, lush green trees and of course the lighthouse which served to mark our way back home. And honestly, with the rocking of the boat I don't know how I managed to take a few good pictures.

We caught many fish, hammerhead sharks, jacks, ladyfish, flounder and even a sea trout. However, my husband caught the most unusual fish we had ever seen. Not only did it have wings and a tail, but it also had legs. Does anyone know what this is?

The Dancing Dolphins

I did not bring the camera on the first day and missed some great shots of a pod of dolphins that frequent the bay. One of them even performed for us as it danced around our boat and flew out of the water. I felt like I was at SeaWorld. During the second day, I spotted them several times, but they never did come as close as they did the first day.

Just in case you are curious, I spent most of the time eating, taking pictures and sleeping while the guys fished. The hours I spent out on the water were very, very relaxing...

  3. This looks SO beautiful and made me hunger for the sea, which of course I don't 'see' here in the desert. I badly need a vacation. Not sure when that will happen, maybe a day or two at Christmas. I have so much to get ready for my book that it's 7 days a week right now. Although just looking at these pictures I could see how relaxing it would be. I could almost feel it in my bones. I lived by the sea for years in Australia and I know the smells and sounds and colors of it. It's very healing and soothing. I'm glad you had this break. It's lovely. And your photos came out GREAT!!! Is the little fish a flying fish?
