The Carolina Cherry Laurel

Thanks to Mrs. Mecomber at New York Renovator I now know the trees on my property are called prunus caroliniana or more commonly known as Carolina cherry laurel or cherry laurel. This particular laurel comes from the Rosaceae or rose family and can grow up to 40 feet. Although these trees contain seeds, twigs and stems that are highly toxic and even fatal if ingested in large quantities by children or horses, the birds enjoy feeding on the berries.

  1. Hey you found it! I'm so glad I could help.

The cherry laurel grows wild in my yard. We have red berries and the same kind of flowers. The flowers are pungent; they smell like almonds. The birds and squirrels seem to love the bushes.
