The Old

Unabashed they wear their years.
Side by side they walk.
The old companion does not stray.
Gentle steps, no hurry here.
No disruptions and no desire to seek an end.

Only one of them may walk again tomorrow.
The sidewalk will search for the missing footsteps.
The trees along the road will scour for the missing scent.
The passersby will notice only one
but I...I will remember.

Although my bones have not yet withered
and my body does not curve,
I wonder if the morning sunshine will
welcome me in the same way
one day.

  1. That is beautiful. Appears to be an elderly person who regularly walks with an old and faithful four-footed friend. How appropriate as we near year's end.

  2. Hi Chuck...you've got it right. I don't know the man, but he lives in my neighborhood. He and his black lab walk through the neighborhood every morning and I often see them. I can't help but stare at them and wonder..... They are both old, very old and obviously tired. My mind races with so many different thoughts; I reflect and personalize so much of what I see around me and then I "have to" write...

Thanks so much for your visits here Chuck...

  3. Adore this poem.

I too have a black mostly lab that I walk with. Maybe some day we'll be old together too.

  4. Dear Mar, This is so so beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes. It speaks to me on sooooooo many levels. It speaks to me of both the timelessness of friendship, nature, love and life. And yet, it speaks of our inescapeable immortality...and you do it all so beautifully. In a way that tugs at my heart strings.

Hope you are having a good semester break and getting time with your family and friends. We did some hiking yesterday in the cold and wind and it left me feeling so so ALIVE. And then it was pure bliss to come back into a warm house. Made us both appreciate all that we have.

Sending you much love and a huge hug,
    Robin

  5. Being a somewhat older dog myself, I can well appreciate the insight expressed in this poem.

  6. Thank you Tracy, Robin and Marty for stopping by and enjoying this poem. I only write when I am inspired by something or someone. -I just don't like doing the "have to's" I suppose.- The old man and his dog really brighten my mornings when I see them. I feel a sense of respect and admiration for both of them, but most importantly I feel connected to them in a way I have yet to understand fully.
