October's Reflection (2009)

This fall semester has been quite interesting. I am not sure why, but I suspect something in the air has affected me as well as my students. Maybe it's the uncertainty regarding the economy, health care, Wall Street, the housing crisis or the constant bombardment of negative news.

I believe that in the middle of chaos and apparent negativity, one can find tremendous opportunities. I do not believe in surrender, and I therefore strive hard every day to project the hope and change that so many speak of but few truly attempt to deliver. I don't believe that words alone can change anything. Action changes lives and circumstances, not the sole existence of good intentions.

Words drift into the wind while actions remain imprinted. What good are my words if my actions serve another purpose, if my actions fail to support my words. I have discovered that life resembles an essay. The parts and pieces must work together, flow, connect and support the others. Lack of focus, organization and development leads to catastrophe in the essay. I know this to be true. Therefore, if life resembles an essay, what might the lack of focus, organization and development mean for the world, for you, for me, for my children and for yours?

Just my thoughts on this cool night here in Florida......

  1. While there are not many that would actually mobilise their words into actions, fewer still would do it consistently - old habits are hard to break, hard to be consistent when there are too many different problems at different times on hand to handle, different situations render different actions, etc are excuses that I use - often. Not that I don't try to do what I've said.

  2. I couldn't agree more with what you write. Your words are a worthy subject for further thought.

  3. I like this post! I agree that actions can speak louder than words.
I also agree that there is entirely too much negative news. It isn't good for the soul to see more bad than good.

And...what do you mean a cool night? It gets cool down that way?
    Have a great day.

  4. Pam, anything in the mid 70's is cool down here. We went out boating last Sunday off Miami Beach and on the way out to sea I got soaked. I was freezing out there, but my husband and kids were loving the weather. The were dry though. The temps were in the 60's but it sure felt colder than that for me. Thanks for the visit.

  5. I've been so concentrated on college applications, spending my days on Acceptedge, that I haven't even absorbed "negative news." I might as well live in a bubble. Thanks for your words!

  7. Happiness is when thoughts and actions are in harmony. I couldn't agree more with you that words alone cannot change the world. We need to put thoughts and words into actions. Enlightening reflections!
