What is Courage?

American Heritage Dictionary

The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.

What kind of woman
  • serves on the PTA, drives her kids to soccer practice and maintains a home and a husband?
  • runs marathons?
  • speaks her mind?
  • owns a gun?
  • chooses life for an unborn child?
  • sends her son off to a foreign country to fight a war?
  • loves her pregnant and unwed daughter?
  • attends church?
  • serves people?
  • loves her country?
  • loves God?

Answer...a courageous woman...

Do you know this woman? How many women do you know who fit this description?

  1. Sarah Palin! The cruelty that is being heaped upon her personally is unbelievable. You don't have to like a person or his or her politics but to heap verbal abuse on her and make dolls of her that are vulgar cross a line.
I personally think she is a fine and courageous woman and she has my vote now.

  2. So I suppose the fact that she want to ban books, cut funding to covenant house, is against a womans right to choose even in the case of incest or rape, had been out of the country twice and believes in teaching creationism is no problem. If you are going to talk about Palin you should mention all sides of Palin.

  3. Hi Mountain Woman

I agree with you. I may not like "some" politicians, yet I choose to be respectful rather than make a mockery out of them. In fact, I try hard to judge based on the content of a person's character rather than the color of their skin, gender or ethnicity.

    Hi Renee

You make good points and I welcome all opinions on this matter. I crave information and I am willing to listen to all sides of many issues, but in the end I must decide and choose based on my own convictions and beliefs, based on what I think, feel and believe is wrong and right.

Freedom of speech is protected under the Constitution, but many a book has been banned from our schools, libraries by both liberals and conservatives. Would I ban offensive books? Perhaps. I depends on the book.

I am not familiar with "covenant house" but I will do my homework and get back on that one.

The abortion issue is a tough one. I believe all children should be protected and they have a right to live. In the end the question is not how the child was conceived but whether he or she has a right to live. A man should never be forced to keep a child; that is why we have adoption.

If freedom of speech means our schools can teach evolution, then I see no reason why freedom speech would not mean we can teach creationism. As a person of faith, I do not fear the teaching of evolution, for my son's are not mere robots digesting information at face value. We have God in our home always. People of no faith should then not fear the teaching of creationism.

I thank you for presenting the other sides of Palin. I agree with you. All people men and women, young and old, rich and poor have many sides. We should all read, observe, debate and question. It is healthy and it is welcomed here.

  4. Another example of her courage and tenacity is how graceful she remains under all of this media attention, most of which is negative.

I couldn't believe they actually interviewed her former pastors and asked them what Palin believes. I also couldn't believe these pastors had the nerve to answer the question. My former pastors have no idea what I believe. Just because you sit in a pew doesn't mean you check your brain at the door.

By the way, Palin never banned books - ever, it's a lie. Charlie Gibson addressed the issue in his interview with her. She also said that her personal views (such as those regarding abortion) would not necessarily be in line with a national policy.

As for providing creationism as an alternate possibility, I'm all for it. We should be teaching children to think, not pumping them with government approved "facts."

If we teach only science, then at what point do we stop asking... "and where did that come from?" If you take it to the minutest particle of an atom or any matter, where did that first little bit of "whatever" come from?

On the other side, we may ask "Where did God come from?" The point is, there is no finite answer to either question, so why not let people decide for themselves?

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
You raise good points. And yes...after further research I realized "the book banning" was also a lie. I guess if we twist and turn our words we can get them to take any shape we want.

I appreciate your time and your thoughts.

  6. In my opinion discussing politics is a difficult thing to do. I'm Canadian so I won't get into American politics...but I would like to say I think everyone has the right to speak their mind, should speak their mind...this can be done insightfully without getting personal as long as we do our research on the subject/facts at hand...having said all that, I do have very strong convictions that often leave me at odds.

    Cheers
